Identity and exhibition design for the nation’s only museum devoted to shells. The new identity features a Wenteltrap shell—a shell specific to the area and dastardly hard to draw. In keeping with the museum’s desire to highlight their position as a scientific leader, the logo needed to be physically accurate and still iconic. The final abstract form strives for a level of wonder and play. The exhibition design was spearheaded by Matter Architecture Practice with the goal of honoring the museum’s academic rigor, highlighting their collection, and celebrating the sheer beauty of the shells.

We created a flexible graphic system for print, exhibition, signage, and digital components, ensuring the museum presents a cohesive, contemporary face to the public. The resulting identity and exhibition spaces position the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium as both a leading research destination and a beloved community attraction.
