The Nature Conservancy
We worked with the Nature Conservancy on two publications that address the status of trees in New York City. The first, The State of the Urban Forest in NYC, represented several years worth of research documenting the extent and health of the urban forest. Along with the book design, we created many data visualizations such as: comparing the tree canopy across boroughs, the types of trees, and the benefits of trees on the quality of life in the city.
We worked closely with the team on the divider pages—collecting leaves from specific tree species, scanning, and creating compositions for each chapter. The raw scans themselves were quite inspiring.
The second book, Urban Forest Agenda, outlines a strategy for the future of New York City's trees. We structured the book so that each of the four strategies began with a representative abstract illustration that was then repeated as an icon throughout that section. Our work included graphics showing the benefits of urban trees, what constitutes the urban forest, the lifecycle of urban trees, and the future for tree recycling.
