Unnamed Figures
A book for the American Folk Art Museum to accompany their exhibition looking at the representation of Blacks in early American painting. Our strategy for the design was to enlarge details of the paintings to emphasize the figures hidden in the shadows and margins. To contrast with the rough brushwork of the blown-up images, we chose a refined contemporary serif font. The layout played with the type shifting from center to off-center, and using the margins for subtitles.
